Can someone ELI5 who Ghislaine Maxwell is and why she matters?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, I just discovered this subreddit and I'm trying to understand the basics. I keep seeing her name mentioned everywhere but I don't understand her role in all of this. The Wikipedia article is confusing. What exactly was she convicted of?

Not a dumb question at all - this stuff is complicated and there's a lot of disinfo out there. Ghislaine Maxwell was Epstein's longtime associate. She was convicted in December 2021 on charges of sex trafficking of minors and conspiracy. She's currently serving 20 years. Her role was essentially recruiting and grooming victims. Multiple survivors have testified about her direct involvement. She's the daughter of Robert Maxwell, a British media mogul who died under mysterious circumstances in 1991.

To add to this: the conviction is detailed in Case No. 20-cr-330 (SDNY). The sentencing memorandum is worth reading if you want primary sources. Key counts: conspiracy to entice minors to travel to engage in illegal sex acts, conspiracy to transport minors with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity, transporting a minor with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity, and sex trafficking of minors.

Also worth noting: her appeal was denied in 2024. She tried to argue for a new trial and got shut down.
